Type Locality and Naming

The name of Guancaohu Formation was given by the No.761 Geological Team of Guangdong in 1959. The type locality is in the Jiexi County. The type section is the Guancaohu section of Jiexi, Guangdong (115º55', 22º38').


Lithology and Thickness

The Guancaohu Formation is composed of volcanic clastic sediments and volcanic rocks, dominating by conglomerate, sandstone, tuffaceous sandstone, tuff, basalt, andesite tuff and rhyolite. Its thickness is over 2000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In eastern Guangdong, it unconformably contacts with the underlying Nanshancun Fm.

Upper contact

It unconformably contacts with the overlying Heshui Fm.

Regional extent

This formation well occurs in eastern Guangdong, and is also distributed in some area of western Guangdong.
